OzHarvest NEST Programs
With a background in the hospitality industry, the founding directors of Seco Sparkling felt it only right that we choose to partner with a charity active in this field. With this in mind, we have happily joined forces with Australian charity OzHarvest through our sponsorship of their NEST programs.
OzHarvest is well known for its food rescue programs, collecting quality excess food from many businesses and organisations including hotels and restaurants, and redistributing this to more than 1000 charities supporting communities in need. Having seen first-hand how much food goes to waste in the hospitality sector we know how important it is to support this work.
Less well known but equally as important and impactful as the food rescue programs are the OzHarvest education programs, including NEST (Nutrition Education Sustenance Training) which is aimed at “teaching people in need the skills and knowledge to nurture themselves through healthier eating choices and food preparation through a series of hands on cooking and nutrition workshops.”
The NEST program, run by a qualified nutritionist and volunteers, “is designed around the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating and provides the participants the opportunity to learn valuable skills and knowledge on nutritious healthy eating choices, low cost meal planning, budgeting, reading food labels, correct storage of food, shopping tips, healthier cooking tips, and ways to minimise food waste.”
Each program comprises of six two hour workshops and is delivered to individuals as well as staff of charitable organisations nation-wide, and can be tailored to cultural and dietary requirements to ensure participants get the most value from their training.
Recently two of our directors, Paul and Richard, were fortunate enough to be able to volunteer on a NEST program held at the Women’s Refugee Friendship cafe – a subgroup of the Victorian Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Coalition (VIRWC) and thoroughly enjoyed sharing time, knowledge and laughs with this diverse and inspiring group of women.

Bobby Bajram has been battling multiple sclerosis (MS) since the age of 13, at which time he was the youngest Australian to have been diagnosed with this debilitating illness. Despite living with the hardships of MS, including intermittent bouts of blindness and paralysis, Bobby is a passionate man with an infectiously positive attitude who has dedicated his life to inspiring those living with disabilities.
Bobby is aiming to become the first person with MS to summit Mount Everest and hopes, in doing so, to raise money and awareness not only for those living with a disability but also for their carers. It is a feat which even his own doctor has recommended against however Bobby is a fighter and is determined that he will succeed. He trains in gyms, on mountains, and uses hypoxi machines to make sure he is as fit as possible in readiness for his climb, scheduled for August 2018.
As part of this preparation Bobby only drinks sparkling water as he was, until recently, yet to find an alternative that tasted good. So when he was introduced to Seco Sparkling through a friend of ours he exclaimed “I’ve found God!” It was (and still is) the best carbonated beverage out there and, as he says, he has tried them all!
His story is an amazing one and since our initial contact with Bobby we have been impressed by his overwhelming enthusiasm and fighting spirit. We have therefore decided to sponsor Bobby by making sure he doesn’t run out of Seco Sparkling as he continues on his quest to conquer Mount Everest.
